Bioware: Saving the RPG Genre
Woah, very controversial statement, right? Well, i like RPG’s, but i’m extremely picky ones i play. For the longest time, i have been without any real RPG’s that i have been able to invest into and enjoy the story of. Then along came Mass effect, which at first thought wouldn’t be for me, since i couldn’t get into that during the introduction to the game. But i fought my way through that, and really enjoyed it. Bioware really take care with the writing, the voice acting and especially the back story and that is something i really appreciate and is essential for me to immerse myself into these games. So Mass effect lead me on to a game i’m really enjoying, that is Dragon age.
I can’t even remember an RPG on this level that i have enjoyed, must be 4 – 5 years at least. But seriously, if Mass effect 2 hooks me like Dragon age has, then my above statement really is true for me, Bioware has saved the RPG genre for me, and hopefully these games do good, so other Western RPG developers copy these formula to making a great RPG, because i hate not having an RPG to play. I suppose this is a good opportunity to gush over Dragon age. Well, I’ve been taking screenshots again, and even though the console versions apparently don’t look that great, i love the look of the PC version on maximum settings. I’ve got two characters, my warrior (first image) and my mage, the below image. The combat in the game can be a bit iffy, many of the actions are not on buttons you’d expect them to, and even have 10 hours on each character, i’m still not used to it properly, but that is really just the controls, the combat itself, i’d have to say is actually pretty good.
If you like RPG’s, buy Dragon age, it really is a good game. Great story, fantastic voice acting and dialogue and good levelling and loot system. Another great surprise of 2009, wasn’t sure if i would like this game for some reason i can’t even explain, but i did, and still am. But yeah, saving the RPG genre? outside my own little bubble? Not really, but for me? Yuh!
